Thoughts on "Sunshine"
I was not real interested in this movie at first. It just did not seem to be something that I thought I was going to enjoy. But at the behest of a couple friends, I took the chance and rented it.
The Premise
The movie is set in the not-too-distant future when for an unexplained reason, the sun begins to fade. Leaving us in a gradually increasing ice age.
To combat this, Earth sends the second of two missions to the sun to re-ignite it. I will not go into detail on the fate of the previous mission because that would be a spoiler, and I do not like doing that to people. But the movie starts out as what you would expect to be your usual sci-fi drama.
The Twist (What hooked me)
Through the movie, what I thought was going to be your typical, gung-ho, "we all gotta save earth", movie, Boyle turns the it into not only a thought-provoking story, in the way the characters have to think about their mission and the possibility that they might not return to earth. But he also adds a bit of a thriller story line and succeeds in making the sun itself a character and not just a part of the plot.
The Characters
I like the chemistry between the cast and the way they interact. They are believable, likeable and It is played out sort of the way you might expect a group of people from different backgrounds and lifestyles to act when in close quarters for as long as they would have to be to be on a venture like this.
The Conclusion
This was really a good movie, in my opinion. It does start a little slow, and there are a few points where those of you that are science nuts will groan a little, but overall I think that it is a suspenseful, enjoyable and thrilling movie that has a couple moments where some of you might even shed a tear or two.
If you liked Sunshine, here a re a couple other movies that I think you might also like. Give them a try and then tell me what you think of them.
